Each student will create a fictional character, or real character
who lived during the Holocaust. One person may decide to be Anne
Frank or Primo Levi. Using the timeline made in class as a guide, each
student will pick an event to research. The next step will be for
each student to make a 2-5 minute "slide" about their event, in the
role of their character (for example, one student might describe the
massacre at Babi Yar in 1941 through the eyes of someone that died
there), using IMovie. Then all of the slides will be put together in order
like a completed timeline, in turn making it a complete documentary on
the Holocaust!
For the individual student
1. Using the provided resources
you will be researching the event, person, place or thing that you
briefly looked up during our Holocaust Timeline activity.
2. Using iMovie, you will create a short digital presentation representing your
research topic. For example, if your event is Kristallnacht, you could play the role of Anne
Frank or Oskar Schindler, keeping a diary of the events going on in the
news. Use your voice to be their voice and add
pictures, or real footage. Your piece should only be 2-5 minutes long.
For help with iMovie see the iMovie and Digital Story resources.
3. After
you have created your part you will have to work with the person whose
event is before yours to create a smooth transition from topic to
topic. That person will teach you how to create an iMovie transition,
and in turn you will teach the person whose event is after yours the
same thing.
4. When the documentary is complete you will be presenting it to you teacher (Ken Burns).

For the class
As a class you will be
responsible for putting the entire documentary together. Each student
will be required to spend time in my room with groups that I will be posting, to work
on the documentary. After everybody has had a turn giving input on the
collective piece, there will be a few extra days for others to tweak the
product if they so choose. If changes are made by any groups they will
have to record what they have changed, so that the rest of the class and I can
make sure that not one person or group is completely changing the
documentary. The documentary will be due at the end of the unit and you will
presenting it to me for evaluation. The documentary should be at least
30 minutes long and include all of the timeline events. NO inappropriate content is allowed. Be creative and have fun!
